A. Lange & Söhne to support Regularity Time Trial at the 2019 Veteran Car Run

The Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is delighted to announce a new partnership with A. Lange & Söhne. The renowned German luxury watchmaker will support the historic event’s increasingly popular timed section of the Run, now renamed for 2019 as the A. Lange & Söhne Regularity Time Trial.

The A. Lange & Söhne Regularity Time Trial allows participants to enjoy the pleasure of competition. Entrants can nominate the average speed they think they will maintain over a timed section of the route with the winner being the driver that gets closest to their prediction.

First introduced in 2015, the initiative has snowballed with no fewer than 75% of participants contesting the appealing time trial in 2018; nearly double the number that had entered four years previously.

Miles Wade, Club Secretary of the Royal Automobile Club, said: “The Regularity Time Trial has now become an integral part of our Run, and this year we’re looking forward to making it even more special with our new Timing Partner, A. Lange & Söhne. As one of the finest traditional watchmakers in the world, the rich heritage of the brand complements the Run perfectly.”

Time-keeping and mechanical workings have always played an important part in motoring events throughout history. Like the pioneering cars on the Run, the exquisite timepieces lovingly produced by A. Lange & Söhne are hand-crafted, precision-engineered and full of innovation.

The annual Veteran Car Run celebrates the first ‘Emancipation Run’ from London to Brighton held in November 1896 and is the world’s longest-running motoring event. The original Emancipation Run marked the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act raising the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4mph to 14mph and abolishing the need for the vehicles to be preceded by a man carrying a red flag.

With a rich history of its own, A. Lange & Söhne was founded more than 50 years before the Run in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte near Dresden. Today’s portfolio of gold and platinum wristwatches are still inspired by the complex and beautiful timepieces of the company’s passionate and painstaking creator.

Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is world famous for his record breaking number of test match runs, but now he has added another historic Run to his impressive list of achievements… last week the renowned ‘master blaster’ took a drive in a 1900 Daimler, a regular participant in the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

The Daimler is in the care of the Royal Automobile Club, organiser of the annual pilgrimage from capital to coast, and Tendulkar was visiting its Pall Mall Clubhouse while in the UK for the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Aware of his love of cars and always keen to share its passion for historic vehicles, the Club transported a 1900 Daimler (sporting a Veteran Car Run Number 10 – Sachin’s number as a player) from its Woodcote Park Motor House to Pall Mall in time for Sachin’s visit.

The Club’s Head of Motoring, Jeremy Vaughan, showed the cricketer the ropes of the 1900 veteran car as they journeyed down Pall Mall together, before turning into St James’s Square.

Following a brief lesson on the workings of a Victorian car, Tendulkar got behind the wheel to have a go at driving the 119-year old Daimler. The sight of a pioneering veteran car being driven by the world’s top scoring batsman was certainly a sight to behold for pedestrians.

After his ride, Tendulkar was driven back to the clubhouse in the veteran and headed inside to enjoy dinner in the clubhouse.

The Club was thrilled to share the excitement of the veteran car world with the icon, and the cricketing star was similarly overjoyed with his ride in a veteran, describing it as ‘an experience I shall always cherish’.

“He soon got the swing of it and despite being overtaken by a bicycle, which he thought was very amusing, proceeded to circle around the square becoming more confident by the minute,” reported Vaughan. “For an international mega star who has 75 million followers on social media, it was so reassuring to teach someone who was genuinely interested in the experience and had the time to listen and take it all in. I did ask him to join us on the Run… and, who knows, perhaps one day he will accept our invitation.”

 As tradition dictates, at daybreak on the first Sunday in November more than 400 remarkable horseless carriages dating back to the dawn of motoring will set out from Hyde Park on their annual pilgrimage to Brighton on the Sussex coast.

As entries open today, almost exactly six months in advance of the annual pilgrimage from the capital to the coast, participants from across the globe can now sign up their pre-1905 cars for the 2019 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. 

This year, the Run has a new-look website and a new entry management system so entrants can look forward to an updated and intuitive entry process which will make signing-up their veteran cars for the Run easier than ever. 

Changing habits mean that over 40 per cent of those using the website and registering to take part in the Run now do so via a mobile device. It is for this reason that the official website and entry system have been significantly refreshed and are now fully device-responsive.

Commenting on the entries opening and redesigned website, Miles Wade, Club Secretary of the Royal Automobile Club, said: “To this day, the Run remains the Club’s flagship event, drawing in a truly international following every year. We always seek to provide the best experience possible for our participants and followers, and our revamped website and entry system contributes to this. Global icon furthers her whole-hearted passions for old cars and great causes 

World-renowned supermodel Yasmin Le Bon will combine her love of cars and resolve to support good causes by representing the Movember Foundation in this weekend’s Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox (4 November).

Le Bon, one of the most famous faces in the fashion industry over the past 30 years, will drive a 1901 Wolseley on the world’s longest running and most revered motoring event.

On the hallowed 60-mile route from the capital’s Hyde Park to Madeira Drive on the Sussex coast she will be joined by more than 400 other pre-1905 pioneering horseless carriages. As always it will be a remarkable voyage for all those celebrating the dawn of the motoring era.

In preparation for the start, which tradition dictates comes at a chilly daybreak on Sunday morning, Le Bon visited the British Motor Museum at Gaydon to take a short familiarisation test drive in the Wolseley.

Yasmin Le Bon said, “It’s been a true honour to have a chance to drive the Wolseley as part of the Veteran Car Run. It’s made me realise we have so many creature comforts that we take for granted when driving around in such modern, technological cars today, that it’s easy to forget what a huge challenge motoring was back at the start of the last century. I’m now relishing my drive from London to Brighton on the famous Veteran Car Run and even more so, as I’m helping to raise awareness for the Movember Foundation, a great organisation addressing male health issues and to help stop men dying too young.”
 
Ever since she was a young girl, Le Bon has been fascinated by cars and jumping aboard the venerable Wolseley for the celebrated trip from London to Brighton has certainly caught her imagination.
 
"My father has always loved cars, not only aesthetically and mechanically, but also for the simple reason that cars enable you to go on adventures," she explained.
 
In addition to the spirit of adventure offered by driving, two other qualities Le Bon admires about vintage cars are their unique design and evocation of a bygone era, when life moved at a more leisurely pace and people held onto their cherished cars for generations – both major virtues enjoyed by all those in the veteran car world.
 
Learning about Wolseley’s history further fuelled Le Bon’s interest and intrigue. The company was originally in the business of producing sheep shearing machines but grabbed the opportunity to move into burgeoning car production right at the start of the 20^th century.
 
It set up a plant in Birmingham and quickly established itself as one of the biggest and most important British manufacturers – a position it held until being acquired by Morris and eventually absorbed into what finally became British Leyland. The 1901 model Le Bon will be piloting on the road to Brighton is propelled by a 10 horsepower, twin-cylinder Austin engine giving it a top speed of around 20mph. When new it came with a £360 price tag.
 
Today, the Wolseley is exhibited at the newly refurbished British Motor Museum – the world’s largest display of historic British cars. At the last count, the Trust’s collection totals more than 300 vehicles spanning classic and vintage as well as veteran eras a handful of which are regulars on the Veteran Car Run.
 
Le Bon is no stranger to world’s premier motoring events. Over recent years she has been a judge at the Louis Vuitton Classic, Cartier Style et Luxe Concours d'Elégance at Goodwood and shared a Jaguar with David Gandy on the Mille Miglia, in which she was one of the few women to participate.
 
The Movember Foundation is the official charity partner of the 2018 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and, with Le Bon’s enthusiastic support, will be raising awareness for men’s health issues such as the causes of prostate cancer and testicular cancer as well as mental health and suicide prevention.

SECOND-OLDEST SURVIVING VAUXHALL TO TAKE ON LONDON TO BRIGHTON

Proving that Vauxhall’s slogan, ‘British Brand since 1903’, runs more than skin-deep, two of the company’s oldest vehicles – one of which was built in the year Vauxhall was founded as a car manufacturer – will be taking on next Sunday’s Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

Acknowledged as the world’s second-oldest surviving Vauxhall, the 1903 ‘5HP’ will be taking on the 60-mile long Run for the first time since 2015, co-driven by Vauxhall’s Managing Director, Steve Norman, and former Communications Director, Denis Chick.

Vauxhall’s 5HP is the 45th vehicle built by the company. It’s a rare four-seat model, with passengers sitting over the engine, in front of the driver. Vauxhall Heritage purchased and restored the car, registered BS8213, 20 years ago and it has completed the Run on many occasions since. Originally bought for £154 3s 3d by as Scottish shipbuilder, 5HP has a water-cooled 983cc engine powering its rear wheels through an epicyclic gearbox and chain drive. Top speed is 20mph and fuel consumption around 38mpg.

Joining 5hp is Vauxhall’s 6HP model. Registered JNM 400, it was one of 70 cars produced in 1904 at Vauxhall’s original factory in South London. Making its 56th appearance on the Run, 6HP also features a one-litre, water-cooled single-cylinder engine, along with tiller steering and similar performance and economy to the 5HP. Vauxhall Heritage has owned the car for more than 40 years. Journalist, Steve Fowler, will co-drive 6HP with Vauxhall PR’s Simon Hucknall.

Vauxhall is the only surviving British car brand eligible to enter Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which is only open to cars built before 1905. Celebrating over a century of continuous vehicle production in London and Luton (its base since 1905), Vauxhall has produced over 14 million vehicles in its 115-year history.

The 2018 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run marks the 122th anniversary of the first run in 1896, which celebrated the passing of the Locomotives on Highways Act the same year, giving road-going vehicles the right to travel at up to 14mph, instead of the previous 2mph in towns led by an escort carrying a red flag. The next event didn’t happen until 1927, and has been owned and organised by the Royal Automobile Club since 1930, with only the onset of the Second World War and fuel rationing stopping it being an annual fixture right up to date. Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is now the world’s longest running motoring event.

London to Brighton veteran cars return for time-honoured halfway halt on High Street   

As tradition dictates, Crawley High Street will once again be travelling back in time as the time-honoured halfway halt on next month’s running of the world famous Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox.

More than 120 years ago, all those motoring pioneers taking part in the original Emancipation Run in 1896 passed through Crawley’s welcoming town centre as they head south on what then was a very rudimentary A23.

Marking that milestone, on Sunday 4 November more than 400 veteran cars dating back to the dawn of motoring will once again descend on the Sussex town’s historical High Street to take a well-earned breather on their annual pilgrimage from the capital’s Hyde Park to Madeira Drive on the Sussex seaside. Once again, the visitor experience in Crawley is supported by the UK’s second largest airport and the most efficient single-runway airport in the world.

With the intrepid crews and their amazing pre-1905 horseless carriages enjoying a short ‘flying visit’ respite before tackling the tricky and steep hills of the South Downs, the notably wide expanses of central Crawley always provide the perfect free-to-view opportunity for thousands of enthusiastic visitors to see all these extraordinary Victorian and Edwardian vehicles up close.

Official partner Gatwick Airport returns with support for participants and spectators alike. The former will be provided with travel sweets and seat cushions to aid their journey down to Brighton, while the latter will be given postcards to exchange for a hot drink in the local La Rusta café located close by in The Martlets. Gatwick will also be parking a genuine veteran car on the High Street, thus providing visitors with the chance to get behind the wheel for the perfect photo opportunity.

Gatwick Airport’s Community Engagement Manager, Melanie Wrightson, said: “We are proud to be involved in the Veteran Car Run for the third year in a row, in what is sure to be an exciting event for everyone participating and spectating.

Lined with charismatic buildings from bygone eras, Crawley High Street – now by-passed by through traffic – also marks an important stage on the Run as it’s the start of the highly-popular Regularity Time Trial, the only competitive element of the event. Finishing 13 miles away in Burgess Hill, the Regularity Time Trail requires drivers to get as close to a chosen average speed as possible.

TESTICULAR CANCER Testicular cancer strikes early; it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in young men in the UK. If diagnosed and treated early the outcome for men with testicular cancer is positive, but a 95% chance of survival is no comfort to the 1 man in 20 who won’t make it. It is 90 years since one of Britain’s most passionate early motorists first joined the London to Brighton bandwagon

As the world’s longest running motoring event, the annual Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox is no stranger to celebrating milestones. In November participants aboard their pioneering pre-1905 vehicles will be honouring the 122 years since the original Emancipation Run of 1896 which welcomed the speed limit for ‘light automobiles’ being raised for 4mph to 14mph and abolished the need for a man to walk in front of all vehicles waving a red flag.

A number of other notable landmarks will be acclaimed on Sunday 4 November, too – few more distinguished, perhaps, than the 90th anniversary of Richard Shuttleworth’s debut on the timeless event back in 1928 driving what is considered to be the first 12bhp, four-cylinder Panhard-Levassor ever built.

Over the following decade, the renowned aviation and motoring enthusiast became a regular on the road to Brighton only failing to make the start in 1935 after missing the deadline to file his entry – and, even then, he cheekily joined in at Westminster Bridge. 

Shuttleworth sadly lost his life on an RAF training exercise in 1940 aged just 31, however his 1898 Panhard (registration: TM 19) has remained in the family ever since and today resides in the world famous Shuttleworth Collection of vintage planes and cars that Richard founded before his untimely death. Indeed, the Panhard was the car that started The Collection, today regarded as one of the finest living museums of its genre to be found anywhere on the globe.

As with so many participants on The Veteran Car Run, Shuttleworth’s debut back in 1928 was something of a fraught affair. The enthusiastic young man purchased the car specifically to join the Run but, just the day before the start, Panhard’s UK agents said they were unable to make the necessary preparations.

Undaunted by this last-minute setback, he and a friend worked through the night to get the mechanicals working and they proceeded to complete the distance with four passengers aboard.

Since then the Panhard has completed the hallowed journey on numerous further occasions and will be aiming to honour its 90th anniversary with another successful capital-to-coast passage in November. Fuelling those birthday ambitions, volunteers at The Shuttleworth Collection have just completed a two-year mechanical restoration.

“Marking the 90th anniversary of Richard Shuttleworth’s first participation in the Brighton Run will be very special for all involved in keeping The Collection alive in his memory,” said Stuart Gray, Vehicle Manager at the Shuttleworth Trust who will be among those driving the Panhard in November. “I’m sure it will be a proud – yet emotional – day as we picture a hugely enthusiastic young Richard jumping behind the wheel of this very car back in 1928.”

Before being acquired by Shuttleworth – and adding further to the Panhard’s remarkable history – it is reputed to have been originally built as a racer and to have finished fourth in the 1898 Paris to Amsterdam race driven by Chevalier Réné de Knyff covering the 890 miles at an average speed of 24mph.

In 1901 the car was re-bodied by Messrs. Morgan and Sons in its current Broughton style and, thereafter, was first owned by Lord Rothschild family. It is also said to have been driven into Ascot by King Edward VII.

The centre of attention for many of the 400,000-plus visitors to the Regent Street Motor Show will be the annual Veteran Car Concours d’Elegance. Held the day before the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox makes its annual trip from London to Brighton, the Concours d’Elegance will see around 100 of these remarkable motoring pioneers vying for honours. In keeping with the spirit of the event, many of the drivers and passengers will dress in period costume, reflecting the fashions of the era… fashions just like those that might have been purchased from Regent Street at the end of the 19th century. Among the prizes this year will be a special award for the top French car and ensemble, reflecting the theme of this year’s Veteran Car Run. Although Germany is generally regarded as the birthplace of the automobile, France was the nation that introduced the car to the world. In 1903, for example, more than 30,000 cars were manufactured in France, representing about half the world’s total production. As ever, a team of knowledgeable judges will minutely inspect every car to find the winners. Judges in previous years have included Formula 1 boss Ross Brawn, himself a Veteran Car Run participant, and classic car authority, TV’s Edd China. Commenting on what to expect from this year’s event, Nick Wigley, CEO of Show organisers, Goose Live Events, who run the event on behalf of the Royal Automobile Club, said: “The Regent Street Motor Show embraces everything from the earliest 19th century veterans to the 21st century cars and motoring technologies of the future – the electric vehicles we will all be driving tomorrow. We’ll be closing Regent Street to through traffic during the day to provide a safe and highly accessible environment for everyone to enjoy... absolutely free. It will be phenomenal”.  Both the Regent Street Motor Show and the Veteran Car Run are key events in the week-long London Motor Week run by the Royal Automobile Club. The first Regent Street Motor Show was staged in 2005 and it has now become a hugely popular must-see spectacle, attracting vast crowds keen not only to see the cars and take test drives in the latest machinery but also enjoy street entertainment from dance troupes and a motorcycle stunt team. And, of course, there’s ample opportunity to shop for clothing that’s the height of today’s fashion.
