ALVIS GRABS THE HEADLINES AS ORDER BOOKS OPEN FOR CONTINUATION CLASSICS

ALVIS GRABS THE HEADLINES AS ORDER BOOKS OPEN FOR CONTINUATION CLASSICS

• 50 years after its demise, the ‘Red Triangle’ re-emerges
• Glorious Graber-bodied TF21 from 1966 reborn
• Pre-war Coachbuilt supercars take to The Grand Avenue
• Alvis Brooklands Special also stars on the indoor runway
• Date confirmed for The London Classic Car Show in 2018

Fifty years after Alvis stopped making cars, the company is back and its order book is open. And the company will have a significant presence at the London Classic Car Show (23-26 February, London ExCeL) to mark the occasion.

Unlike some marque revivals, The Alvis Car Company isn’t simply attaching the famous ‘Red Triangle’ badge to the front of a modern supercar but instead is recreating genuine supercars from an earlier age.

Among the Alvis cars at the capital’s premier classic car show will be a stunning 1966 Graber-bodied TF21 (below bottom row), made in the company’s penultimate year, and a wonderful 4.3 drophead coupé with Lancefield coachwork from 1937 (above). The cars are originals but Alvis is offering hand-built facsimiles of both as part of a limited run of Continuation Models.

The Graber and Lancefield cars can be seen and heard in action as they will be taking part in one of the show’s major displays, The Perfect Ten. Sixty of the world’s greatest classic cars in ten categories – saloon, coupé, convertible, sports car, supercar, hatchback, shooting break, sports racer, streamliner and single-seater – will be paraded along The Grand Avenue, an automotive catwalk that runs through the centre of the show.

Another original that’s also now available as an Alvis Continuation Model, the head-turning Bertelli-bodied 4.3-litre Sports Coupé from 1935 (below middle row), will be shown on the company’s display stand.

A fourth Alvis, a unique Brooklands racer known as the Powys-Lybbe Special (below top row) after its original creator, amateur racer Antony Powys-Lybbe, will be a further of The Perfect Ten entrants. Based on a 1931 Alvis 12/60 ‘Beetleback’, it had been given a lighter and narrower body and ran at over 90mph on the outer Brooklands circuit.

Richard Joyce, managing director of The Alvis Car Company, said: “Our Continuation Cars are as close to the originals as we can get. We have had to make some modifications to ensure they comply with current Individual Vehicle Approval regulations but essentially the idea is to give owners the same supercar driving experience that owners had when the cars were new. And when you bear in mind that the 4.3 Tourer had a 0-60mph time of 11.3 seconds back in 1938, there’s no denying these were the supercars of their day.”

Alvis is just one of the many grand marques that will be featured at the show. Another major display brings together twenty of the greatest Ferrari road cars, worth an estimated £120 million. This special showcase is being curated with the help of renowned London-based performance car expert Joe Macari.

New for this year is The Grand Avenue’s Open Paddock, allowing visitors to get even closer to the star cars while another innovation is the Beaulieu Pop-up Autojumble. Some top-class stalls will bring a flavour of the world-famous autojumble to London by selling classic car parts, books and magazines and motoring ephemera.

The Pop-up Autojumble will form part of Car Club Square where some of the country’s leading one-make clubs will be staging displays of their favourite machines and will have club members on hand to discuss the merits of their chosen marque or model.

Now in its third year, the London Classic Car Show is bigger than ever and will have more than 700 stunning classic cars on display, some for sale from leading dealers in the classic world. The show has always attracted star names and this year’s visitors will include Le Mans Legends Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell as guests of honour.

This year, the London Classic Car Show even incorporates a second show, Historic Motorsport International (HMI), which is devoted to historic racing and rallying.

As well as countless motor sport specialists, championship organisers, competition car dealers and race teams, special displays will celebrate 50 years of both Formula Ford and the all-conquering Ford DFV F1 engine. Also planned is a thrilling presentation underlining the breadth of historic machinery that will be taking part in the Silverstone Classic festival in July.

An open forum on Thursday and Friday, the Historic Motorsport Conference Programme – hosted in the show’s Supagard Theatre by motorsport broadcaster Henry Hope-Frost and with expert opinions from leading names in the historic motorsport world – will debate a wide variety of topics including Scrutineering and Eligibility, Driving Standards and Safety and the Promotion and Marketing of Historic Motorsport.

With The London Classic Car Show going from strength-to-strength and the instant success of its new HMI sister show, the organisers have already confirmed dates for both events in 2018. Bas Bungish, Group Event Director said: “HMI has been a fantastic addition to The London Classic Car Show and the two events complement each other superbly. We’re already in discussions with partners for next year’s events which again will combine at ExCeL London and run from 22 to 25 February, 2018.”

In the meantime, next month’s HMI will be officially opened by racing legend Jacky Ickx at 12 noon on Thursday, 23 February, with the London Classic Car Show opening its door later in the afternoon in readiness for a special, star-studded Gala Evening honouring Le Mans legends including six-time winner Ickx and five-time winners Derek Bell and Emanuele Pirro.

Tickets to the 2017 London Classic Car Show/HMI are now available from the show website –thelondonclassiccarshow.co.uk – and start at £24 for single adult entry (£27 on the door on the day). Gala evening standard entry costs £42 or for access to the Grand Avenue Club, where the interviews take place, tickets cost £70.

LE MANS LEGENDS BARTH, BELL, ICKX AND PIRRO HEADLINE THE HMI 2017 CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

• Insights from Le Mans winners Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell, Emanuele Pirro and Jürgen Barth plus many more
• Two-day programme of interviews, panel sessions and presentations
• Entry ticket includes HMI Conference Programme in Supagard Theatre
• Ickx to open HMI at noon on 23 February with the Conference Programme starting at 13:30
• Date confirmed for second Historic Motorsport International in 2018

Four celebrated legends from the epic Le Mans 24 Hours are topping a star-studded line-up of speakers appearing at the first ever Historic Motorsport International Conference Programme.

Between them Jacky Ickx (below middle right), Derek Bell (below bottom left), Emanuele Pirro (below middle left) and Jürgen Barth (below bottom right) have won the coveted French endurance classic no fewer than 17 times. On 23 and 24 February they will be among those sharing their memories, experiences, know-how and wisdom with visitors to the inaugural Historic Motorsport International, London’s new exhibition devoted to all aspects of historic racing and rallying. The show runs from 23-26 February at ExCeL London.

Along with a roster of renowned race car designers, team managers, event organisers and specialist engineers, the famous four will all be taking part in the two-day Conference Programme. The Programme takes place in the Supagard Theatre which is free to attend each day.

Others appearing include tin-top father and son racers, Andrew and Mike Jordan – past BTCC champion and race winner respectively – former F1 and World Sportscar designer Tony Southgate and reigning FIA Historic F1 champion Nick Padmore.

The inaugural HMI Conference Programme also includes panel session discussions on key topics for historic motorsport. Important issues coming under analysis will cover Scrutineering and Eligibility, Driving Standards and Safety, the Landscape of Historic Rallying and the Promotion of Historic Motorsport.

Among the participants will be distinguished experts including long distance rally organiser Fred Gallagher, series organisers and promoters Carol Spagg (U2TC) and Duncan Wiltshire (Motor Racing Legends) and engineers, drivers and eligibility specialists such as MSA scrutineer John Hopwood and Barry Cannell from the HGPCA.

Other Conference Programme contributors include prominent historic racer Shaun Lynn, Porsche preparation expert Richard Tuthill, John Pearson from Dunlop Motorsport and well-respected journalist Marcus Pye. It all adds up to two days of absorbing discussions and dialogue that no one with even a passing interest in historic motorsport will want to miss.

David Paterson, Marketing Director of Supagard commented: “Supagard has a strong presence in historic motorsport through our proud partnership with the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association and we are looking to build on that with the Supagard Theatre at HMI.”

Conference Programme host Henry Hope-Frost added: “I am not sure what I am most looking forward to; talking to Le Mans heroes Ickx, Bell, Barth and Pirro will be an undoubted highlight as will learning more from Tony Southgate, the man behind the Le Mans-winning Jaguar XJR-9 and XJR-12.”

Among the many other attractions at HMI, which runs until Sunday, 26 February, are special displays celebrating 50 years of both Formula Ford and the all-conquering Ford DFV F1 engine and a thrilling presentation underlining the breadth of historic machinery that will be taking part in the Silverstone Classic festival in July.

With the 2017 HMI launch event having generated so much traction within the historic motorsport community, the organisers have already confirmed dates of a follow up show in 2018. Bas Bungish, Group Event Director for Historic Motorsport International and the London Classic Car Show, said: “HMI has been a fantastic addition to the London Classic Car Show and the two events complement each other superbly. We’re already in discussions with partners for next year’s events which again will combine at ExCeL London and run from 22 to 25 February, 2018.”

This year’s exhibition will be officially opened by Jacky Ickx at 12 noon on Thursday, 23 February. Tickets are now available from the show website – historicmotorsportinternational.co.uk – and start at £24 for single adult entry (£27 on the door on the day).

Historic Motorsport International will be held alongside the London Classic Car Show, now in its third year and looking to build on the record 33,000 visitors who visited the 2016 event. Both shows are staged by Brand Events, the company behind a raft of successful motoring events including CarFest, Top Gear Live and the IGNITION Festival of Motoring.

Historic Motorsport International will open its doors at 12:00 noon on Thursday 23 February, while the London Classic Car Show will burst into life at 3pm that afternoon. Tickets give access to both shows.

The Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival
17/18 June 2017

Finishing Straight Re-Opening Highlights premier Motorsport Festival at Brooklands Museum

The grand re-opening of the restored Finishing Straight of the World’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit following restoration will take place on Saturday 17 June 2017, 110 years to the day since the Track was originally opened – and the first day of the 2017 Double Twelve Motorsport Festival, co-promoted by Brooklands Museum and the Vintage Sports-Car Club.

This section of track has been hidden from view since 1940, under a WWII Bellman Hangar which is being restored and relocated as part of the Heritage Lottery-funded Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Race Track Revival Project.

Highlights of the re-opening will include a re-enactment of the original opening parade of 17 June 1907 with Veteran cars, displays and demonstrations of surviving Brooklands racing cars and motorcycles, and taxying runs by some of the Museum’s historic aircraft.

One of the main elements of the Aircraft Factory Project has been the dismantling of the WWII Aircraft Hangar which was built on the Finishing Straight in 1940.  This is currently being restored in South Wales and will return early in 2017 to be re-assembled in a new location in front of the recently completed Flight Shed, alongside the Finishing Straight and next to the London Bus Museum.

The Hangar slab has been removed to reveal the original Finishing Straight which will be reunited with the other surviving sections to restore the Pre-war view from the Banking and the Clubhouse, something that has not been seen since the Track closed to the public in 1939.

Once again, the Vintage Sports-Car Club will oversee the well-established format of three separate competitive events of the Double Twelve, with a Sprint, Driving Tests and Concours d’Élégance held over two days, with aggregate scores from any two going towards overall Double Twelve awards. With the special interest in this extraordinary milestone in Brooklands’ already incredible history, the quality of entries is expected to be high.

The three stand-alone competitive events will include:

•           The Double Twelve Speed Trials (Sprint) on the Mercedes-Benz World Circuit on Saturday
•           The Double Twelve Concours held at the Museum across both days
•           The Double Twelve Driving Tests on both sites on Sunday

As well as a main feature of the Double Twelve Festival weekend, Saturday’s Speed Trials will also form a round of the VSCC’s celebrated Speed Championship in 2017, incorporating ten of the Club’s Sprint and Hill Climb events throughout the season.

Added to this line-up will be the very popular Test Hill Challenge as well as the chance to see the Museum’s collections of Vintage cars, aircraft and vehicles. The site will be filled with Car Club displays, demonstrations and trade stands alongside additional catering, live music and plenty to keep families entertained.

Details of entries and Classes will be announced soon through the press and media and on the Double Twelve pages of the main Museum website at: www.brooklandsmuseum.com and the VSCC website www.vscc.co.uk.
