The capital city’s premier celebration of automotive culture and nostalgia is staged at the state-of-the-art ExCeL venue from 15-18 February and offers a wide choice of tickets including both potential stocking fillers and more substantial gifts for under the Christmas tree. And, with the school spring half-term holiday in mind, family tickets are also available for those wanting to share the festive love.

Crammed with innovative crowd-pleasing features, mouth-watering classic cars and a long list of celebrity visitors, The London Classic Car Show is a great day out. Adding to the appeal, following the huge success of the three previous events, the 2018 edition is gearing up to be even bigger and better than ever before.

Among the unmissable event’s unique features is The Grand Avenue, a highway running through the centre of the exhibition along which many exceptional classic cars parade the length of the Show.

Previous showcases have been ‘The Perfect 10’, ‘6 Nations’ and ‘A Century of Motoring’. In 2018, the focus will be on ‘Specials’ – a theme which will celebrate 60 rare beasts steeped in history and mystique owing to their unique designs and often outlandish performance.

Other highlights will include the return of Car Club Square – featuring popular and affordable classics – as well as Speakers’ Corner, an open forum where high-profile and expert guests are interviewed about a wide range of subjects.

In total, more than 700 of the world’s finest classic cars will be on display, making the not-be-be-missed London Classic Car Show the capital city’s premier automotive showcase of its genre.

Prices start at £25 for single adult entry on Friday, Saturday or Sunday when purchased as gifts in advance while a child’s ticket (aged 6-16) costs £20; those under six-years-old are admitted free. Late afternoon entry admission is an even more affordable option.

Providing yet more value, all tickets also include entry to the London Classic Car Show’s sister show Historic Motorsport International, which celebrates the UK’s leading role in all areas of historic motor sport.

For those seeking a superior gift, VIP Premium tickets are available for Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting at £55. These include fast-track entry, a Show Handbook and access to the Grand Avenue Club with relaxed seating, private catering and a bar offering two free drinks. Next February, Premium ticket-holders will also be able to enjoy the best-ever views of the unique Grand Avenue from the new Bridge Viewing Area.

With such a spectacular motoring showcase to relish, over half a million visitors to the recent Regent Street Motor Show – which, this year, was presented by Enjoy Illinois Route 66 – were winners as the capital’s premier shopping destination was transformed into the country’s biggest free-to-view motor show.

But while this year’s record attendance of 524,382 savoured some amazing automotive displays, some of those present did actually go home with prizes.

One lucky individual – Geoff Frost from Chesham – won a four-night holiday, including flights and accommodation to Illinois. The US state was promoting itself and its famous Route 66, America’s ‘Mother Road’, with an eye-catching display of American automotive nostalgia on Regent Street.

There were winners, too, in the annual Veteran Car Concours d’Elegance taking place in the heart of the capital on the eve of the famous Bonhams Veteran Car Run, supported by Hiscox.

This year’s judging panel was comprised of some notable experts from the veteran car world and also included TV presenters Edd China and Alan Titchmarsh.

As previously announced, after much deliberation, the judges awarded the Overall Winner’s trophy to the illustrious Darracq owned by Malcolm Ginns – a car that has a remarkable history.

Other award winners included the Museo dell’Automobile di Torino for its 1892 Peugeot Mk3 - the earliest car entered into this year’s Veteran Car Run - and David Pain’s splendid 1904 Albion Wagonette which proved most popular with the public online vote.

HMI TO FIRE UP THE SOUND OF THUNDER AT EXCEL

HMI TO FIRE UP THE SOUND
OF THUNDER AT EXCEL

  • Six racing specials to be driven on the Grand Avenue
  • All six on display in special HMI paddock
  • HMI expands into the same hall as the London Classic Car Show
  • Busy Conference Programme confirmed for Friday (16 Feb)
  • Exclusive Drivers’ Club for VIP visitors and exhibitors

Six very special racing cars will deliver the sound of thunder as they take to the Grand Avenue at Historic Motorsport International at London’s ExCeL, next year (15-18 February).

Following a hugely successful opening show in 2017, HMI is expanding for its second year and moving halls within the exhibition centre to join the London Classic Car Show, its sister event.

The change will allow a number of star cars to take advantage of the innovative Grand Avenue – an automotive catwalk along which the stars of the show are driven. The sight and sound of all manner of classics and supercars on the move adds a totally new dimension to the exhibition.

And HMI aims to make the most of the move by assembling its very own paddock supported by Octane magazine featuring six unique racing cars that fit with the Grand Avenue’s 2018 theme of ‘Specials'.

The eye-catching new enclosure will be located right in the heart of HMI at the opposite end of the indoor roadway to the familiar London Classic Car Show paddock. Here the cars will not only be on permanent public display when not performing but visitors will also be able to savour the sounds and smells of these cars being fired up in readiness for action.

The innovation will add yet more excitement – more so as the first of the six to be identified is an Edwardian Fiat, better known as the ‘Beast of Turin’, a flame-spitting 28.5-litre behemoth that claimed a world land speed record in 1911 at 116 mph (photo below left top middle).

Event director Alexia Antikides said: “HMI reflects the UK’s leading role in the world of classic motor racing and rallying, and is a platform for engineering and preparation experts, event organisers and promoters and participants. Moving the show from the other side of the ExCeL centre to join the London Classic Car Show gives it more space and even more of a presence.

“Best of all, it gives us access to the Grand Avenue where we promise to exercise some seriously exciting racing cars – unique one-offs that redefined their respective eras. The Beast of Turin is just the start: watch the space to discover what else we have planned.”

Other innovations planned for HMI in 2018 include a special hospitality hub open exclusively to exhibitors and their guests.

The HMI Drivers’ Club is supported by leading companies at the heart of historic motorsport including British Motor Heritage, Dunlop HP Tyres and Piloti, makers of professional and competition driving shoes. The Drivers’ Club will be a central meeting place where exhibitors can catch up with existing and potential customers, colleagues, friends and the trade.

Confirmed exhibitors read like a who’s who of the historic motorsport world. They include organising clubs such as the Veteran Sports Car Club (VSCC), Under 2-Litre Touring Car (U2TC) and Pre ’63 GT Championships, the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC), and the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association (HGPCA).

Equipe GTS, which runs racing championships for pre-1966 FIA GT cars, is also taking space, alongside racing manufacturers such as Crosslé and Lister Cars and specialist dealers and preparation experts like Hall & Hall, the Old Racing Car Company, Quinntech Racing and Tech 9 Motorsport.

Engine experts including Gosnays and Cosworth and event organisers and support companies including Rally Round, Supagard, Lista and Motor Racing Medics will also be on hand.

Many of the features of the first event will be back for 2018. The Supagard Theatre will again host HMI’s Conference Programme, which mixes debate on important issues affecting the sport with star driver appearances and other entertainment. Among the names appearing at HMI in 2017 were multiple Le Mans winners Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell, Emanuele Pirro and Jackie Oliver plus tin-top hero Steve Soper and F1 ace Martin Donnelly.

Historic Motorsport International and the London Classic Car Show are staged by Brand Events, the company behind a raft of successful motoring events including CarFest, Fast and Furious Live and Scotland’s IGNITION Festival of Motoring.

The 2018 edition of HMI/LCCS will be held at ExCeL, London, on 15-18 February. Follow the show website – historicmotorsportinternational.co.uk – for news and information as it breaks.

LONDON TO BRIGHTON CAR RUN - CHOPARD REWARDS TIME-TRAVELLERS

CHOPARD REWARDS TIME-TRAVELLERS

1904 Cadillac driver from Norway wins Regularity Time Trial on
Veteran Car Run route from London to Brighton

The 2017 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, supported by Hiscox, not only witnessed more than 400 cars from the dawn of motoring travelling from Hyde Park down to the Sussex coast but also provided participants with the extra challenge of a competitive element.

First introduced in 2014, the Regularity Time Trial which is now sponsored by Chopard, pits the wits of the drivers and their passengers against-the-clock and the initiative has really captured imaginations. Just 52 entered the inaugural contest – a figure that rose to a record 313 entrants in 2017, fuelled by the prize of a Chopard Mille Miglia Chronograph, worth £4,900, awaiting the winner.

Far from a race, the competition called on entrants to nominate target average speed for the 13-mile section on the route between Crawley High Street and Burgess Hill. Taking into account the pre-1905 vintage of the veteran vehicles on parade, the options available were 8 mph, 10 mph, 12 mph, 14 mph, 16 mph and 18 mph.

This year’s winner – Ymer Sletter – opted for a 12 mph average between the two points and came closest to his nominated speed. Driving a Cadillac dating back to 1904 (photo above), Sletter’s actual speed for the allocated section in the Sussex Downs was an amazing 12.01 mph. Chris Rolph finished second in his 1904 Wolseley having averaged 11.97 mph against a similar 12 mph target time while Patrick Hemphill finished a commendable third among the time travellers aboard his 1903 Oldsmobile, having averaged 12.07 mph also against his 12 mph goal.

“While this wonderful event is all about participation rather than competition, we are delighted that the Chopard Regularity Time Trial is adding additional dimension to the famous drive from London to Brighton and proving so popular with more and more of those privileged enough to be partaking in this historic Run,” said Antonius Kerssenbrock, Managing Director of Chopard UK who took part in the Run for the first time this year himself.

“We congratulate all those who entered this year’s Chopard Regularity Time Trial – notably our winner who came within a tenth of a second of achieving the perfect result. Precision and reliability have been key characteristics of all Chopard timepieces dating right back to the company’s dawn in the 19th Century, and those two attributes were key to those winning this increasingly sought-after award.”
