SWEDISH ROADTRIP TO BEAULIEU’S INTERNATIONAL AUTOJUMBLE DISPLAY

A resurrected 1954 Wolseley 4/44 that has been unused for 30 years is to be driven all the way from Sweden to take part in a special Golden Oldies display at Beaulieu’s International Autojumble on September 7^th & 8^th.

The Wolseley is one of more than 50 pre-1970 classic cars that have already been booked for the display, which will celebrate the golden age of motoring in the grounds of the National Motor Museum.

Sold new in Sweden but off the road for three decades, it has been renovated by Nostalgia Magazine and is ready to tackle the gruelling trek across Europe. With rust repairs completed and brakes and carburettor rebuilt, the charming British classic saloon car has been given a full service ready to motor back to the country where it was originally built.

The diverse Golden Oldies line-up is part of the weekend’s award-winning International Autojumble, with more than 2,000 stands packed with classic car spares, motoring books and automobilia.

Sure to turn heads in the display is a powerful 1922 Bentley 3/4.5 Litre with a remarkable racing and wartime past. It competed at prestigious motorsport venues including Shelsley Walsh, Brooklands and Le Mans during the 1920s and ’30s and was converted into an auxiliary fire engine during WWII. With its fire-fighting gear removed in peacetime, it is a fine example of the legendary pre-war sports car.

Also taking part are sports cars including a 1969 Marcos 3-litre, 1927 Delage DMS, 1959 Ashley Special and 1969 Mercedes 280SL, joined by luxury classics including a 1964 Rolls-Royce Phantom V, 1928 Cadillac LaSalle 7-seater luxury sedan and 1969 Daimler V8 250. More down-to-earth is a 1952 Land Rover Series I, which was originally used by the RAF on airfields for towing gliders, a 1928 Austin Seven Chummy, 1943 Morris Z van, 1966 Sunbeam Rapier Series V, rare 1966 Vauxhall Viva HA SL and a once-common 1963 Ford Consul Cortina Mk1.

A Sunday highlight is Trunk Traders, as enthusiasts sell assorted motoring jumble from their garages, sheds and lofts, providing a great opportunity to find bargains. Places are limited, with only a few final pitches remaining.

First launched 20 years to great acclaim at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show, Pagani Automobili S.p.A. was a new name on the exotica scene with an amazing debut model; the breath-taking Zonda hypercar. The Zonda was originally to be called ‘Fangio F1’ after Formula One Champion, Juan Manuel Fangio, who assisted with the car’s early development, however, following his death in 1995, it was renamed Zonda, the name given to the hot air current that runs above Argentina.

From the very first 1999 Zonda C12 to the final incarnation of the Zonda – the £15million Barchetta – less than 150 examples of the model have been built over the last 20 years, split over a dozen or more different derivatives. All have been powered by a mid-mounted V12 engine, handmade by AMG and ranging in size from 6-litres to 7.3-litres, with power ranging from 444 bhp to a thumping 789 bhp enabling that particular model to achieve a top speed of 221 mph (355 km/h) maximum speed. A number of Zondas have now gone through bespoke upgrades to the bodywork and power trains by the Modena-based Pagani works creating a new generation of Zonda.

On display at this year’s Salon Privé will be the following models:

• Zonda C12 (2000): The car that launched the company and Horacio Pagani’s first production supercar. It was an absolute game-changer with its distinctive styling and hand-built Mercedes-AMG 6 Litre V12 engine which then produced 444 bhp, enough to propel the C12 to 60 mph in 4 seconds – quite an achievement back in 1999. The model on display has been through the full Rinascimento

• Zonda F Roadster (2005): The Zonda F (F for Fangio) on display is one of just 25 Roadster examples built. The Zonda F was a substantially re-engineered Zonda, using the hand-crafted 7.3-litre Mercedes-AMG V12, developing 641 bhp. Announced at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show in coupe form (the F Roadster following in 2006), the Zonda F was equipped with extra headlights and different fog lights at the sides, plus new bodywork (revised front end, new rear spoiler and more aerodynamic vents all around) that improved the car's aerodynamics, as well as different side mirrors. Further enhancements centred on optional carbon/ceramic brakes (measuring 380 mm) and a redesigned "Z preg" weave in the all-carbon fibre crash structure to improve rigidity and reduce weight.

• Zonda Cinque Roadster (2009): As its name suggests, Pagani built just five examples of the Zonda Cinque Roadster which was a 669 bhp road-legal version of the track-only Zonda R. The Zonda Cinque was developed at the request of the Pagani dealer in Hong Kong, with the model intended to be the last iteration of the Zonda. The differences over other Zonda variants were a new three-mode six-speed sequential gearbox, resulting in shifts taking less than 100 milliseconds, dropping the 0–100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time down to just 3.4 seconds. The Cinque also had a revised form of carbon fibre called "carbo-titanium" which incorporated titanium in the weave to increase strength and rigidity, mated to magnesium and titanium suspension components. It also featured revised bodywork, included a longer front splitter, new side skirts, rear diffuser, bumper canards and a flatter underside, as well as a roof-mounted air intake scoop, enabled the Cinque to generate 750 kg (1,653 lb) of down-force at 355 km/h (221 mph) and 1.45 G of cornering force.

• Zonda Tricolore (2010): Just three Tricolore models were built making it one of the rarest of them all. Originally conceived as a one-off, Horacio Pagani decided to make three as a tribute to the Frecce Tricolour, Italy's aerobatic team answer to the British Red Arrows. The Tricolore carried much of the body from the Zonda Cinque, the model being unpainted, except for a clear blue lacquer, and red, white, and green stripes from the nose along the top of the car's surface. Unique to this car was a small wing placed behind the cockpit which reflected the tail wing of Frecce Tricolori's Aermacchi MB-339 stunt aircraft. The three Tricolores were priced at £1.2 million when new, but are now worth considerably more, as are all Pagani Zondas.

• Zonda 760 Oliver Edition (2016): An exclusive one-off edition of the Pagani Zonda, the unique 760 ‘Oliver’ model was built in 2016 for one of Pagani’s biggest collectors and was based on the 760 RS model. Unlike other special edition Zondas, this 760 has a uniquely designed rear spoiler and was engineered by one of the world GT champions to generate the maximum downforce to give the ultimate grip on the circuit. The car was tested by the Toyota factory driver and GT500 champion Akira Iida on Fuji Speedway during the Pagani Raduno in Japan, with Mr Iida commenting that the Zonda Oliver Evolution was the best handling and closest to the Zonda Evolution R road car he had ever driven.

In just 20 years, Horacio has created not only an icon but also a benchmark in design, engineering and strategic partnerships and it’s a testimony to Pagani Automobili that many Zonda owners choose not to sell their beloved cars, but instead send them back to the factory to either restore their cars to their original glory through the Rinascimento program or have a unique bespoke upgrade through their dedicated team. Years ago, I recall a conversation with Horacio’s then-assistant, who referred to the Zonda as a piece of art and she wasn’t wrong. To this day, the design and detail found in a Pagani is beyond exceptional.”

BLENHEIM PALACE HOSTS SUMMER JAGUAR FESTIVAL THIS SUNDAY INCLUDING THE WORLD’S LARGEST DISPLAY OF JAGUARS FROM FILM & TV

Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire will be graced by the spectacle of hundreds of classic and modern Jaguars on Sunday 12th May, for the 2019 Summer Jaguar Festival, hosted by the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club. The event promises to offer something for everyone for fans of the iconic British car brand to families looking for a great day out.

Set in the stunning surroundings of the Blenheim Palace courtyard, visitors will be presented with the largest gathering of Jaguars from Film and TV, ever seen. The display will include a full range of vehicles from James Bond films, cult classics such as the E-Type from the Italian Job and cars from TV dramas including the Mark 1 saloon from the hit series Endeavour. Fans of the 1970s show Minder will be excited by Arthur Daley’s very own Jaguar XJ6 as used in the TV classic, a car that has rarely been seen since filming ceased.

The Jaguar Mark 2, synonymous with the exploits of TV detective Inspector Morse, celebrates 60 years since it went on sale this year. This momentous occasion will be marked by a procession of over one hundred classic Jaguars from all eras around the usually closed roads of the Blenheim Palace parkland.

The courtyard will also feature appearances from the inspirational team behind the Jaguar F Type currently racing in the British GT championship. Visitors will not fail to be captivated by the fascinating story behind the Invictus Games Racing team, who consist of two ex-military servicemen who have overcome horrific injuries sustained on operations in the middle-east, to turn their lives around and compete at the top levels of motorsport alongside pro-driver Matthew George. The story is even more inspiring when you learn that the team won their class in the first race of the season at Oulton Park last month, despite the fact that neither Paul Vice nor Steve McCulley even had racing licenses two years ago! There will be a chance to meet the drivers and see the cars in the Blenheim Palace courtyard throughout the day.

Elsewhere visitors will be treated to displays of performance Jaguars and racing cars, celebrating the achievements of the Tom Walkinshaw racing team. The team, once based in Kidlington, Oxfordshire were famous (amongst other motor racing achievements) for taking Jaguar to their Le Mans victories of 1988 and 1990 as well as creating some of the finest supercars wearing the Jaguar badge. TWR racing were also one of the major employers in their area of Oxfordshire in the 1980s and 1990s. The TWR display will include an XJ220 Le Mans car kindly displayed by Don Law. Don Law explains the car’s significance,

“The car on display is one of the four XJ220 chassis transferred from Jaguar Sport Bloxham to TWR Racing in early 1993 for the preparation and assault on the GT Class for Le Mans that year.   Of the four chassis prepared, three cars entered the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1993, and this one is chassis number 004, in full 1993 Le Mans race livery.”

The event also offers a trade show, where businesses from the classic Jaguar industry will showcase their products and services alongside cars for sale, arts, crafts and food stalls.

Interviews and commentary with visiting celebrities from the Jaguar world, car owners, racing drivers and other personalities will be broadcast on a big screen sponsored by CMC Classic Motor Cars, Bridgnorth for all to enjoy throughout the day.

Furthermore, those wanting to attend but worrying that it may cause them to miss the Spanish Grand Prix will be pleased to know that the full round of the F1 race will also be shown live on the big screen from 14.00hrs, thanks to event sponsors Pirelli.

AUTOMOTIVE AMERICANA ON DISPLAY IN LONDON CONCOURS’ THE COLLECTOR FEATURE

The London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, will each year shine a light on one individual’s car collection; revealing the personal stories and immense passion behind it. This year, London Concours’ The Collector is London-based, Julian Balme, showcasing a selection of legendary automotive Americana – think hot rods and big block V8s!

Setting the tone nicely is a 1932 Ford Model B Roadster, converted into a hot rod by a Californian father and son in the ‘60s. Like the AC Cobra, the1932 Ford Model B has been replicated many times but this is one of only a handful of cars in the UK that began life in one of Henry Ford's US factories 87 years ago.

Or even more audacious; the Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon ‘Gasser’. What started life as a regular 'grocery-getter' up until 1969, was turned into a 'gasser' competition drag racer, which needed to run on regular fuel and have working headlights. Its 7.0-litre V8 produces 540hp – enough to complete the quarter-mile in 13 seconds flat.

Then there’s the very special Lincoln Continental Cabriolet; the rarest car in Julian's collection. Only 350 were built in 1940, the very first year of production, and this Continental is the only one in the UK – the only other existing example is in Europe.

A beautiful 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 is bringing some LA cool to the Honourable Artillery Company, powered by a lazy 6.3-litre V8. It was used to contest VSCC’s Pomeroy Trophy, the Nostalgia Drags and the first Scottish Malts Rally. And competition is a theme among Julian’s collection, which also includes a 4.7-litre V8 Falcon Sprint – twice a finisher at the Spa Six Hours – and ‘Wooly Bully’, a Lincoln Cosmopolitan which competed in the re-running of the legendary Carrera Panamericana.

But any car collection will be sprinkled with those very special cars that hold a sentimental value greater than any amount of money. A selection of these will form part of Julian’s collection at London Concours, including a Lotus Elan Plus 2S that he bought just weeks after passing his driving test. In the 36 years Julian has owned it, the Elan has had two engine rebuilds, a chassis change and a respray.

Every car collector is passionate about something, and I hope it’s clear for anyone to see that Julian’s very fond of the lazy V8s and hot rod culture that took hold of America for decades, and to a certain extent still does. What we want to show here is that car collections are just as much about the cars that mean the most to you as the ones that cost the most; that’s why sprinkled in amongst the line-up are some lovely personal stories, including not only Julian’s first ever car, a Lotus Elan, but also the most recent car added to his collection, a TriumphTR4.”

With an offering of nearly 100 automotive icons from the modern day to the early 20thCentury, the Honourable Artillery Company’s glorious five-acre lawn will be transformed into a motoring utopia between 5-6 June. There will be special classes dedicated to the finest Ferraris and finest Jaguars ever built, an ‘Italian Job’ celebration featuring seven Lamborghini Miuras and a display of the greatest automotive ‘Icons’.

But London Concours is not just about the cars on display; it’s an automotive garden party complete with art from Collier & Dobson and Ella Freire, drinks from Rémy Martin and Veuve Clicquot, and fashion from Neapolitan tailors, Isaia.

The London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, will be hosting a special display of iconic Jaguar models in its ‘Great Marques – Jaguar’ class, presented by Truefitt and Hill. With a line-up of 10 of the finest cars to have ever rolled off the Jaguar assembly line, together they define what makes Jaguar an icon of the British automotive industry.

From success on the greatest race tracks in the world to cruising the sweeping boulevards of Hollywood, each car in this class has transcended generations to take its place on a list of the greatest Jaguars – and even the greatest cars – ever built.

Perhaps the most notorious British automotive icon is the Jaguar E-Type; the coveted model that Enzo Ferrari himself described as the ‘most beautiful car ever made’. Quickly identified as a must-have model amongst the world’s rich and famous, Jaguar produced 70,000 cars throughout its 14-year production run. Such was the majesty of the E-Type is that you were just as likely to see the car cruising through the South of France as you were to see its Lightweight brethren on the world’s racing tracks.

Moving through the decades, Jaguar’s eye-catching bodies have helped to create a legacy renowned for expert design. From the Malcolm Sayer-penned aerodynamic lines of the Jaguar E-Type, to the first road car to be made completely from carbon fibre, the XJR-15, Jaguar’s design team has played a substantial role in their classification as a ‘Great Marques’.

Jaguar’s long and illustrious history in motorsport has forever informed the evolution of their road cars. Nothing epitomises this more than the Jaguar XK120 - the world’s fastest production car at launch, and holder of a number of world speed records. And from the XK120 more motorsport success followed, perhaps most famously with the C-Type and D-Type – both of which will be at London Concours.

Although only 53 examples were built, the C-Type put Jaguar on the global motorsport map, with wins at Le Mans 24 Hours in both 1951 and 1953. During its latter win, the switch to disc brakes – a novel solution at the time – kick-started a revolution across the industry. The D-Type, meanwhile, marked out by its iconic finned design, secured three consecutive wins at Le Mans (in 1955, 56 and 57). the D-Type is perhaps the most famous racing Jaguar ever. So dominant were they at Le Mans, that in 1957 D-Types finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th.

But no Jaguar celebration would be complete without delving right back into the marque’s early history, including its time under the Swallow Sidecars badge. The London Concours will be displaying the SS1 Fixed Head Coupé, first revealed to the world at the 1931 London Motor Show. Only 158 were ever built.

Between 5-6 June, the Honourable Artillery Company HQ will be transformed into a motoring enthusiast’s paradise, with nearly 100 automotive greats spread across all eras, within the confines of the most luxurious lawn in the square mile. The seven carefully curated classes, including ‘The Icons’ and ‘The Outlaws’, make London Concours the ultimate automotive summer garden party.

The London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, has announced the first of its exceptional special features; a show-stopping gathering of iconic Lamborghini Miuras. Once the world’s fastest production car, and hailed as one of the greatest automotive designs of all time, as many as eight examples will be on display at the London Concoursthis June

In the forthcoming, definitive book on the model, The Lamborghini Miura, to be published by Kidston SA this summer, the outrageous Italian supercar is celebrated as the one that set the template for almost every great automotive performance icon since. First revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966, its revolutionary rear mid-engined layout quickly became de rigueur for the many supercar pretenders that followed. 

As if that wasn’t reason enough to celebrate the Miura, this year marks 50 years since the premiere of The Italian Job, and although the Minis secured their place in pop culture history, it was the Miura in the opening scene that captured the imagination of petrolheads the world over. Accompanied by a spine-tingling V12 soundtrack, the Miura was driven up Italy’s beautiful Gran San Bernardo pass, in one of cinema’s greatest ever automotive scenes.

That particular car was finished in lurid Arancia Miura, and the London Concours will bring together a world-class collection of up to eight variants – including one in Arancia Miura – showcasing the gamut of outlandish shades offered by the factory. Among them, London Concours visitors will also see Miuras finished in Giallo Sole, Bianco and Azzuro Cielo.

In total, nearly 100 automotive greats of all eras will be on display on the idyllic lawns of the Honourable Artillery Company HQ when the London Concours rolls into the City from 5-6 June. Curated across seven distinct classes, including ‘The Icons’ and ‘The Innovators’, London Concours is the ultimate automotive summer garden party.

RÉTROMOBILE 2019: CITROËN CELEBRATES ITS CENTENARY WITH AN EXCEPTIONAL DISPLAY STAND AND 30 HISTORIC MODELS

As the poster for the show suggests, Citroën is making big preparations for Rétromobile 2019       (6 - 10 February, Paris Expo, Porte de Versailles). As Citroën marks its centenary year, the brand has created a show stand accommodating 30 iconic models from its 100 years – 10 production models, 10 concept cars and 10 racing vehicles.

For its centenary, Citroën has created a brand new set design, complete with an exceptional stand accommodating 30 iconic models divided across three themes:

• 10 production cars (100 years of iconic models, boasting outstanding comfort): Type A 10 HP, C3 5 HP, Traction Avant, Type H Van, 2CV, DS 21 Pallas, Méhari, CX 25 Prestige, C6, New C5 Aircross SUV.
• 10 concept cars (100 years of visionary spirit): C10, Camargue, Karin, Activa 1, Xanae, Osmose,
  C-Métisse, GTbyCitroën, Tubik, CXPERIENCE.
• 10 racing vehicles (100 years of unrivalled sporting exploits): Scarabée d’Or, Petite Rosalie, DS 21 from the 1969 Rally of Morocco, SM from the 1971 Rally of Morocco, 2CV Africa Raid, ZX Rally-Raid, Xsara Kit Car, C4 WRC, C-Elysée WTCC, C3 WRC.

FBHVC BRINGS BIGGEST EVER DISPLAY TO THE LANCASTER INSURANCE CLASSIC MOTOR SHOW, WITH DISCOVER

LANCASTER INSURANCE CLASSIC MOTOR SHOW, WITH DISCOVERY, WILL BE HELD AT BIRMINGHAM’S NEC FROM 9-11 NOVEMBER.

The FBHVC has released a taster of what visitors to their stand can expect, with something for everyone, from commercials to sports cars.

For fans of military vehicles, the Scout Carrier Mk 1L with its four guns is guaranteed to attract plenty of attention. Carrying the military identification number T5329, it was completed on 17 July 1939 and of the 963 Scout Carriers made this one is the only known survivor.  Sent to North Africa for use by the British Army - it still sports a bullet hole sustained during enemy action - it then found its way to Australia in March 1943.

Sold to a farmer who wanted the V8 engine, the Scout was discovered by a military vehicle collector in 2006. Later sold to its present owner who undertook a detailed restoration, it was found to be remarkably well preserved and retains plenty of original features including the original civilian registration number of RMY 683.

It won’t be the only big vehicle on the FBHVC stand as there will also be a 1931 AEC Regent double decker bus. First delivered to the City of Birmingham Corporation and registered OV 4486, it now belongs to the Transport Museum, Wythall and is nearing the end of a lengthy restoration.

When it comes to working vehicles, traction engines always draw a crowd, only this one is a little different. Made entirely from LEGO, it is the work of John Cramp who named his creation ‘The Old Workhorse’. Part of the LEGO Ideas initiative that encourages enthusiasts to submit designs, a model receiving 10,000 votes will be considered for production.

Admirers of commercial vehicles will also be delighted by the appearance of a 1968 Bedford CA van belonging to the Vauxhall Heritage Collection. Launched in 1952 and with more than 250,000 produced, the CA was hugely popular with delivery drivers and tradespeople. The one-piece windscreen and larger radiator grille identify this example as one built towards the end of production, and it is painted in the same livery as vans used at the Vauxhall plant during the early 1960s.

Of course, classic cars haven’t been forgotten and the BMW Z1 is sure to prove popular. The model was launched in 1988 - the same year that the FBHVC was formed – and the example on display belongs to proud owner, Jeff Hewison, who purchased the car in July 2006: “It was stunning and definitely love at first sight. After buying it from a BMW dealer I only expected to own it for ten years but realised I couldn’t bring myself to let her go. It’s the most pleasant and rewarding car I have ever driven, and a masterpiece of German engineering.”
