The latest, and arguably greatest, Hagerty Festival of the Unexceptional took place in the beautiful surroundings of Claydon House in Buckinghamshire on Saturday, 20 July. Welcoming thousands of enthusiasts, the 2019 hurrah for the humdrum saw huge numbers of enthusiasts of the ordinary gather in the sunshine to admire vehicles many would ignore.

Classic vehicle insurance and valuation specialists Hagerty International created the first Festival of the Unexceptional (FOTU) in 2014 to highlight the attrition rate of some of the most popular and best-loved vehicles of our recent motoring past, with the event now becoming a focal point for the core enthusiasts who take real pride in their rare and long-forgotten everyday family cars of the 1968-1989 ‘Unexceptional Era’. 

50 expertly selected unexceptional models were presented on the lawns of Claydon House with a hugely diverse and eclectic selection that has become expected from FOTU. Highlights included a 1992 Renault Clio 1.4 RT, in showroom condition and showing just 24,000 miles since new. Another popular entrant was a 1987 Rover 820E, suggested to be the very last model of its type remaining on UK roads. Cars that used to be mainstream, but are now a rarity, included a 1989 Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0i CD, a 1985 Nissan Sunny 1.5 GL and a 1980 Ford Cortina 2.0 L. Slightly rarer models included a 1971 Fiat 128, 1979 Colt Sigma and a 1973 Toyota Crown Custom Estate.

Judging took many hours of discussion with owners, car inspections and deliberation in the estate café, as owners waited patiently on the lawns for the final verdict. At 14.00 the results were announced to a crowd fueled by period-style picnics and July sunshine.

• Best in Show: 1977 Morris Marina 1.3 Deluxe Estate owned by Michael Carpenter
• Runner Up: 1978 Chevette E owned by Philip Hunt
• People’s Choice: 1982 Peugeot 305 SR Estate owned by Simon Gaisford
• Junior Judges Choice: 1989 Citroen BX 19 DTR owned by Dan Goff
• Anniversary Class: 1982 Vauxhall Astra GL 1300 owned by David Loasby
• Feast of the Unexceptional/Best Picnic: Mike and Judith Burkett and their 1979 Colt Sigma GLX

The Best in Show winning ‘77 Marina Estate was a true example of base specification, providing an honest interpretation of seventies family motoring. The previous owner had part-restored the car (losing three fingers in the process) before storing it for 15 years in little more than a shed. When uncovered, by the current owner Michael Carpenter, it was covered in a thick layer of dirt that seemed to protect the car as, when cleaned, it revealed the shiny, original paint seen today. A truly honest and well-preserved example of the much-loved Marina.

Notable runner up was a beautiful 1978 Vauxhall Chevette saloon, once again built in absolute base specification. Current owner Philip Hunt has known the car from new and saved it from being scrapped by the original owner. The Chevette was rescued from the crusher and has been well-loved, and used, ever since.

A number of notable cars were present in the Festival car park, and included an Alfa Romeo 2300 Rio, a 50th Anniversary Saab 900 Turbo, a British Gas Transit 4x4, an immaculate, original Golf GL, a rare Renault 25 LWB Limousine, a Rover SD1 that had travelled from Ireland and a number of historic vehicles provided by manufacturers.

Commenting on the sixth Festival of the Unexceptional, Marcus Atkinson of Hagerty International, said, “What a delight it is to present cars that evoke so many memories to so many people, and to reward the enthusiasts who spend precious time and money on keeping the more ordinary classics on the road. As you walk around the lawns you overhear guests saying, ‘my Dad had one of those’ or ‘we went on our Summer holiday in that’ and that’s why we do what we do. Great cars and great memories, a meeting of like-minded people who appreciate that unexceptional is a term of endearment and not derogatory.”

Marcus continued, “Hagerty created FOTU six years ago and we now have a sell-out event that attracts guests from around the world. While we have admiration and passion for all classic car owners and events, FOTU is truly special…more family gathering than sterile show, it brings people together. • The film concept was created to highlight a classic Mini, sourced by Hagerty, which students at the school have rebuilt to a superbly high standard and is now finished in the colours of Stowe School

Leading classic car insurers and valuation specialists Hagerty has created a very special film to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Italian Job movie and 60 years of the Mini. The centrepiece of the film, however, is a Mini that was sourced by Hagerty for the science department at Stowe School which has since been completely rebuilt by Stowe students.

The young engineering team at Stowe School contacted Hagerty in 2018 asking for advice about rebuilding a classic car. After discussion, this quickly escalated into a desire for a major restoration project and, subsequently, Hagerty located a suitable Mini and arranged for the school to acquire the car for students to work upon.

The film, starring the Stowe Mini, is also a homage to Michael Deeley, producer of Blade Runner, The Deer Hunter and The Italian Job, himself an ex-Stowe School student. Michael will be a guest speaker at the Stowe School Speech Day & The OS Classic Car Show, taking place on Saturday 25th May.

The film, capturing the escape of students who break into the school to steal exam papers, was shot entirely on the Stowe School grounds during a school holiday and will be premiered at the school’s Speech Day. Michael himself has no idea a film has been created and will watch it for the first time on Speech Day along with students, staff and parents, none of whom expect a film to be shown.

A testament to the Stowe attitude of fun over formality at Speech Day, the Stowe School management team granted permission to film, with an almost free rein, on the entire estate, and the result will certainly be a surprise to students when they witness a number of cars at full-chat around the school grounds.

In addition to the film, Hagerty sourced and curated an incredible selection of 100 classic cars, which will be displayed on the Stowe lawns during the event. The line-up includes stars of the film, faithful recreations, 50 iconic and classic Minis as well as a host of classic cars driven to the event by parents and former students.

Each year, Hagerty presents the Steady Barker Trophy to the car and driver with the most interesting story displayed at Speech Day & The OS Classic Car Display. The inaugural winner of the trophy in 2018 went to King George’s prized Daimler. A car that has now been invited to the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, showing the standard of exceptional vehicles this event attracts.

Stowe has long been associated with classic cars. Ten years ago, the Head of the School encouraged families who owned a classic car to bring it to Speech Day, an event to celebrate the end of the academic year. 35 cars arrived, and classic cars have since become a staple part of Speech Day & The OS Classic Car Display. Today, more than 100 cars are displayed. The beautiful grounds have also been the home for the famous Hagerty Festival of the Unexceptional event for the last two years.

The effort in concepting, planning and filming this film in secret has been a huge challenge, but when we watched a trio of Minis in cahoots with the students and their Mini, it was well worth it.

HAGERTY VALUATIONS OPEN TO ALL AT BICESTER HERITAGE SUPER SCRAMBLE

Leading classic car insurers and valuation specialists Hagerty has announced the launch of a new format for their live classic car Valuation Arena at Bicester Heritage’s Super Scramble event, taking place Sunday 23rd June.

Hagerty, well known for providing immersive and engaging content for classic car owners across the world, will create a bespoke parking area at Bicester Heritage where guests can leave their cars to be valued while they enjoy the Super Scramble.

While they are away, each car will be inspected and photographed by a team of classic car valuation experts who provide an individual valuation to the owner via email.

Over 40 valuations will be undertaken on the day with each valuation charged at £15.00 all of which goes to charity. All types of vehicle are eligible, the only rule being that each vehicle must be registered prior to (and including) 1995.

Once valued each owner will receive a full report, along with photographs, providing an accurate valuation of their vehicle (in the current market) which can be used when selling, for insurance valuations or simply as a great addition to a car’s history file.

While Hagerty are best known for their classic car insurance and events, Hagerty International is regarded as one of the world leaders in classic car market analysis and the valuation of classic cars. Regular market reports are published by Hagerty taking data from owners, collectors, car sales and auctions from around the world to give an accurate overview of the classic car market, its stability and value.

The 2019 Festival of the Unexceptional a Concours de l’Ordinaire – created and delivered by leading classic vehicle insurance and valuation specialists, Hagerty – will be held for the sixth year in succession on Saturday 20 July.

Originally staged by Hagerty back in 2014 as the first event of its kind in Europe - to celebrate the ordinary, everyday cars that we all grew up with, but have now all but disappeared - the light-hearted Festival of the Unexceptional (or FOTU) has already become a must-attend event for admirers of the mundane motor cars of our past, and has achieved cult status around the world.

For 2019, the location for this unique and fun Hagerty event is the beautiful, concours befitting, Claydon Estate in Buckinghamshire. Claydon House is a fascinating testament to eighteenth-century extravagance and its unassuming exterior hides some of England’s most extraordinary interiors. The estate was built in the eighteenth century by Ralph, 2nd Earl Verney, as a demonstration of wealth and status offering a deliberate juxtaposition with the Hagerty concours, which celebrates the much maligned and long forgotten ‘ordinary’ classic cars and commercial vehicles of the late 1960s, 70s and 80s.

Once again, Hagerty’s annual Concours de l’Ordinaire will be free to attend for the first 600 people and will be only £5 per person thereafter. The event is open to classic cars and light commercial vehicles from across the globe that were built between 1966 to 1996. Rare cars already entered for consideration for the 2019 FOTU include a 1991 Yugo 45 Cabriolet, 1982 Peugeot 305 Estate, 1987 Honda Accord Aerodeck and a 1983 Triumph Acclaim.

2019 sees a new element added to the Concours de l’Ordinaire with the Anniversary Class. This new category celebrates vehicles that have a significant anniversary in 2019, such as 50 years of the Austin Maxi, 50 years of the base-spec Capri, 40 years of the Vauxhall Astra and so on. Already submitted are eligible vehicles such as a 1987 Capri and a 1969 Austin Maxi.

The 2019 event will also see the return of Hagerty’s Feast of the Unexceptional, the period picnic equivalent of the mundane automotive display. All participants are encouraged to bring out the Arctic Roll, Texan bars, cheese fondue and, of course, the obligatory bottle of Asti Spumante!
