Goodwood Revival Meeting 2015 - DK ENGINEERING

DK Engineering Logo

Historic Racing just doesn’t get any better than the Goodwood Revival. The event from start to finish is pure class. Not surprisingly, the meeting attracts race goers and spectators from all over the world and by Sunday evening there was not a single disappointed car fan in West Sussex. As is often the case for the event, fine weather held for most of the weekend and spectators exceeding 100,000 were treated to mostly sunshine.

This year’s Revival was dedicated to Ferrari so of course we were extremely busy at DK Engineering, sending no less than 12 cars! A special Lavant Cup race was dedicated to Ferraris 50s Sports Racers. This fabulous spectacle was held on Saturday afternoon and started after a parade lap led by the Rob Walker / Stirling Moss Ferrari 250 GT SWB (which DK Engineering have both restored and sold several times during the last 30 years.) and the Scuderia Filipinetti 250 LM (which DK had prepared for Le Mans and Pebble Beach earlier in the year.) On Pole Position for the race was James Cottingham in the DK 500 TRC, the 1957 Le Mans Class Winner and a car which DK have prepared and raced for over 25 years. An intense battle between the TRC and the 750 Monza of Carlos Monteverde lasted almost the entire race, but victory was taken by James in the yellow and black 500 TRC. Also on the grid, and driven by David Cottingham, was the 500 TR 0614 MDTR. This wonderful car was first raced in 1956 by Carroll Shelby, later by Olivier Gendebein in the Cuban Grand Prix and it also competed in the famous races held at Nassau in the Bahamas. In 1960 the car stopped racing and then did not “turn a wheel” until September 2015. The car arrived at DK in 2012 for a total restoration and the job was completed just in time for this special event.  In the race the car performed extremely well, as did the well prepared 166 MM from South Africa of Gerrie Van Zyl and the 250 GT Boano of Cengiz Artam. Both Ferraris were brought to the UK especially for this event.

The other main Ferrari celebration was in the Earl’s Court Motor Show building; this presentation has now become a world class display on its own merit, and DK were thrilled to supply a second historic 250 LM, a 275 GTB, 288 GTO, 599 GTO and F50 for the central display, which also included a 250 GTO which DK have maintained for over 30 years, the 250 GT SWB now owned by the RNLI and the 250 GT Tour de France #0763, both of which were previously restored by DK Engineering.

Away from the Prancing Horses, the DK team continued to achieve good positions; most notably James Cottingham who contested the Friday Evening 2 hour race in a Jaguar C-Type, the Sussex Trophy in the Tojeiro Jaguar and the RAC TT (Goodwood’s feature race) in a 289 Cobra. The TT was a thrilling race and James had an intense battle for third place - this time with Porsche Supercup champion and Audi Works Driver, Frank Stippler. Stippler just had the better of Cottingham but their battle made for a fitting finale to arguably Goodwood’s greatest Revival.

This remarkable two owner Daytona was first registered in Italy in July 1971, making this car one of the first “Pop-Up” light examples produced. The car, now UK registered and Classiche Certified, has covered just 24,000 kms and features factory-fitted air conditioning, electric windows and has recently received a full service. It was recently inspected by an expert who commented that it was one of the finest examples he had encountered in recent years. £POA

This exceptional 275 GTB/4 is presented in its original colour of Celeste Chiaro and retains its original “matching numbers” motor and transaxle, having covered approximately 49,000 kms from new. It is Classiche Certified, totally restored, UK registered and complete with a continuous “five owners from new” history; this example is without doubt amongst the finest 275’s available today. £POA

Snetterton prepares to welcome the Vintage Sports-Car Club for its 2015 Race Season Finale

Snetterton prepares to welcome the Vintage Sports-Car Club
for its 2015 Race Season Finale

The VSCC returns for a fourth consecutive year to Snetterton in Norfolk to celebrate the end of another exciting Race Season, with our Seaman Memorial Trophies Meeting on Sunday 27 September again providing the fitting finale.

The action will take place on the venue’s SN200 Circuit with its blend of long, fast straights and technical, sweeping bends with a 10-Race programme. The day will include our traditional events for Vintage, PVT and Historic Racing and Sports-Cars, with a number of the Club’s most prized silverware on offer, such as the prestigious Vintage & Historic Seaman Trophies, first competed for in 1950.

We also look forward to again hosting the Bugatti Owners’ Club’s revered Williams Trophy Race for Pre-1935 2-seater Grand Prix Cars, which celebrates the win of William ‘Grover’ Williams in the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929 driving a Bugatti Type 35B.

The year’s final Premier Cru Racing event will also boast a wonderful line-up of original Pre-war Grand Prix Cars, led by the support of local Maserati Specialists, Sean Danaher Restorations, whilst the Hawthorn International Trophy for 1950s Sports Racing Cars is sure to provide yet another on-track highlight of the season.

Following our Cadwell and Oulton events earlier this year, this will be the third of our ‘Vintage Festivals’ in association with MSV this season. In addition to the usual warm reception and excellent facilities, our hosts have again organised plenty of other Vintage entertainment to complement the on-track activities.

Those who have attended previous events will be familiar with the popular Cream Tea Tent and live Jazz music, whilst the T6 Harvard WW2 trainer aircraft of ‘Aero Legends’ will take to the sky to perform a thrilling aerobatic display during the Lunch Break.

Discover Snetterton's illustrious racing history with a display featuring photos, racing programmes and other memorabilia located in the Circuit Office, whilst an Adventure Playground will keep the younger visitors entertained. With the traditional free access to the Competitor Paddock, dedicated Pre-war and Classic Spectator Car Parks, Trade Stands and Autojumble and catering onsite it is sure to be the ideal family day out.

The Club’s event has proved a real hit with the local motorsport enthusiasts since our first event in 2012 so we anticipate another fantastic spectator and marshalling turnout.

Practice will get underway at 9.30am with Racing to begin at 1.00pm following the Lunch Break (timings subject to change).

Advance Tickets are on sale now until Tuesday 22 September (VSCC Members: £12.50, www.vscc.co.uk; Non-Members: £15.00, www.snetterton.co.uk) or will be available on the gate (All: £19.00). Children Under 13 go free.

‘The Beast of Turin’ set to be star of the VSCC Stand at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show

                                   NEC Classic Car Show 2015_SQUARE.jpg

‘The Beast of Turin’ set to be star of the VSCC Stand at
the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show

September 2015

The VSCC will once again be displaying at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, the UK’s Biggest & Best Classic Motor Show, from 13 - 15 November at The NEC, Birmingham, where the celebrated Fiat S76 is set to be our star attraction.

Built specifically to attempt the World Land Speed Record in 1911, the fire-breathing ‘Beast of Turin’ made a highly anticipated reappearance this year after a meticulous 10-year long restoration by Club Member, Duncan Pittaway.

He set about reconstructing as original a car as he could from what is believed to be an original engine – at 28.4 litres (and only 4 cylinders) the largest car engine ever built – and chassis from the two original cars that existed, using copies of the original FIAT plans, with specialists helping with the new bodywork and gearbox (click here to see it being started for the first time in 100 years).

Following failed record attempts at Brooklands and then Saltburn Sands – having been driven to Yorkshire from Surrey on public roads – the car finally achieved a record top speed of 132.27mph at Ostende in 1913, although failed on its return run to make this official.

We anticipate plenty of interest so be sure to come along to Hall 1 (Premium Hall) and see the Vintage Sports-Car Club on Stand 1-540, where the team look forward to welcoming you.

In addition to the Fiat, we will have a wonderful array of other Vintage machinery on display, representing just some of the Club’s many other activities, including:

·         1913 FIAT S76 ‘Beast of Turin’
·         1927 Delage DIS Tourer
·         1911 Talbot Model M Saloon
·         1928 Hotchkiss Saloon
·         1928 La Fitte Type D
·         1930 Austin 7 Ulster Trials Car

Club Directors and Member volunteers will be on hand throughout the weekend to provide information about the Club, Membership, our Vintage Cars and the general activities of the VSCC.

A selection of our Regalia range will also be available to purchase including this year’s Club Christmas Card and our new History Book, “A Portrait of the Vintage Sports-Car Club, 1934-2014” by Tom Pellow, the ideal Christmas Gift for any Pre-war enthusiast!

·         Concours of Elegance on target to reach over £150,000 raised for this year’s charities, including Action on Addiction and Walking with the Wounded

The Concours of Elegance 2015, held at the Palace of the Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, has rounded off another first-class event with many thousands of visitors, sublime weather, a selection of the world’s rarest cars and some £150,000 raised for charity.

Sixty incredible cars – some never seen before in the UK – partook in the main Concours event, converging on the Palace of Holyroodhouse from all corners of the globe, including America, Australia and Europe. All cars are personally invited by the Concours of Elegance’s prestigious Steering Committee, so a place at the Palace is considered a victory in itself. For that reason, uniquely, the Best in Show award is voted for by the owners of the sixty invited cars.

The 2015 prize went to the 1903 Mercedes Simplex 60HP of Anke Ruckwarth, as owners praised the incredible engineering in this 112-year-old car, powered by a 9.2-litre four-cylinder engine and capable of nearly 80mph. Only four are known to exist.

Meanwhile, the 1927 Mercedes-Benz S Rennsport owned by Klaus Schildbach won the Spirit of the Tour award, chosen by the organisers as the driver and car pairing that was considered to enter most in to the spirit of the 200-mile Highland Tour that the ran ahead of the Concours. The Ferrari 275 GTS/4 NART Spyder of John Shirley was awarded the RAC Spirit of Motoring Award.

An impeccable Jaguar SS1 took home two prizes this year, winning both the RAC Club Trophy and the inaugural Jaguar Trophy. Two independent panels of judges, which included HRH Prince Michael of Kent, Jaguar director of design Ian Callum and Aston Martin head of design Marek Reichman, were unanimous in their decisions. As winner of the RAC Club Trophy the SS1, belonging to Michael and Linda Jewell, will be invited to take part in the main Concours in 2016.

With perfect weather for all three days of the Concours – Owners’ Day, Jaguar Land Rover Saturday and Bentley Sunday – thousands came out to enjoy the exquisite gardens of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Among them were some very special guests, including Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Sir Jackie Stewart and Dario Franchitti.

As ever with the Concours of Elegance, this year’s event successfully raised huge amounts of money for it’s charities for 2015 Action on Addiction, Walking With the Wounded and Springfield Motor Racing’s Club for Young People.

Concours of Elegance is already planning for 2016.  To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday next year, the event will have the biggest and most incredible selection of cars ever seen at the Concours of Elegance.
