TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR SILVER ANNIVERSARY   • Legendary rockers Status Quo top the 2015 live music bill • World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival to celebrate 25 years • New races join fans’ favourites on packed racing programme • Special ‘Silver Sunday’ at Silverstone   With the award-winning Silverstone Classic celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, next summer’s ‘Rocking and Racing’ extravaganza will be the biggest and best yet. Highlighting the special significance of this Silver Anniversary, it is announced today (????day) – as tickets go on sale – that legendary rockers Status Quo will top the live music line-up at the milestone 2015 Silverstone Classic (24-26 July). As tradition now dictates, the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival will also feature an unrivalled number of exciting and evocative races starring more than eight decades of glorious motor sport history. All the established favourites will return including Group C prototypes, Super Tourers, 90s GT Legends and the FIA Masters Historic F1 Championship alongside two eye-catching new grids to be revealed in the New Year. Massive car club displays and record-breaking on-track parades have also become part of the Classic’s spiraling success – and will be again in 2015. The extravaganza’s third day has been aptly designated ‘Silver Sunday at Silverstone’ and all owners of silver cars – whether old or new – will be invited to join in the festivities. To mark the occasion, a special Silver ticket type has been introduced which includes a special in-field parking area plus a sparkling Silver Jubilee cavalcade around the famous Grand Prix circuit. “We want to paint Silverstone silver!” exclaimed Event Director, Nick Wigley. “The Classic just gets bigger and bigger every year but, even by those sky rocketing standards, next year is going to be something very, very special. We are really excited to have Status Quo pumping out their hits on Saturday evening and we have lots more fantastic plans to ensure we celebrate this amazing anniversary in fitting style.” With an unprecedented 64 British hit singles, Status Quo are one of the UK’s best loved bands. Their first chart success came in 1968 and they are still going strong today having just performed an acclaimed acoustic concert for BBC Radio 2 at The Roundhouse in London.   Early Bird tickets are now available until 31 March and offer significant savings of up to 15 per cent. Adult prices start at just £34 and stick to the Classic’s widely praised ‘access all areas’ policy, thus providing admission to both race paddocks, trackside grandstands and the live music concerts. Saturday tickets – including a full race programme and Status Quo – also offer exceptional value. They are currently on sale for £55 rising to £62 if purchased after the Early Bird offer expires. Additional discounts are available to members of registered car clubs displaying their classics on the in-field and, fittingly, owners of silver cars can join the special ‘Silver Sunday’ track parade and associated festive activities for only an extra £25. ON THE BUSES FOR THE 2015 BONHAMS LONDON TO BRIGHTON VETERAN CAR RUN

DJs Chris Evans and Ken Bruce to drive two vintage buses on next year’s Veteran Car Run to raise money for charity
 

A remarkable £350,000 was raised for charity in just half an hour as Radio 2 Breakfast Show DJ Chris Evans auctioned a ride on the 2015 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run (Sunday 1 November 2015).

But it will be a ride with a difference: no fewer than 40 listeners will be driven from London’s Hyde Park to Brighton in a pair of vintage buses… and the chauffeurs will be Evans and his fellow Radio 2 DJ, Ken Bruce.

The auction was raising money for BBC Children in Need. Five top bidders won places for themselves and friends on the two buses – an open topped Napier originally (see image below) built for the War Department in 1915 or 1916 and which runs on solid tyres, and a 1929 single deck Leyland Lioness Charabanc (see main image above).

The top bidder, known just as Mike from East Yorkshire, promised £90,000 for himself and 19 friends to ride down to Brighton, while the next four highest bidders will be taking four friends each.

Dubbed ‘40 go bonkers to Brighton’, the auction was the brainchild of Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Veteran Car Run Steering Group Committee.

He said: “Although neither bus complies with the strict rules of the Run, which is for vehicles built in or before 1905, we are making a special exemption for Children in Need.

“I really hope the winners dress in period costume on the day. Getting into the spirit of the Run makes it all the more fun.”

The winners will set off on their adventure at daybreak on Sunday 1 November and follow the exact route taken by the expected 500 veteran cars taking part. Like the competitors, the buses will make a pit stop in Crawley for a Harrods breakfast before continuing on to the finish on Brighton’s Madeira Drive for the traditional chilli and mulled wine in the Bonhams finish line hospitality.

After a chance to see the veteran cars close up and talk to some of the drivers on the Run, the winners will then be whisked away to Chris Evans’s pub, the Mulberry in Chiddingfold, Surrey, by vintage aeroplane for a 1905 lunch prepared by Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge. Entertainment will be provided by singer/songwriter Jack Savoretti.

Kerridge told Evans: “This is the best. We’ve already started scouring the cookbooks and playing around the menu. Between now and November next year we will have a two-Michelin star 1905 vintage meal. It’s going to be very special.”

The Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run (see general images below) celebrates the original Emancipation Run, held on 14 November 1896, and which marked the Locomotives on the Highway Act. This landmark Act raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 to 14mph and abolished the need for a man walking ahead of the cars waving a red flag.

The first re-enactment of the Emancipation Run took place in 1927 and has taken place every year since, with the exception of the war years and 1947 when petrol rationing was in force.

Was it the Mini or the VW Beetle? Perhaps it was the Model T? Or maybe none of these… Top Gear’s James May reckons he has the answer.


The Car That Changed The World: it’s a debate that rages whenever a few petrol-heads get together…

There are dozens of pretenders to the throne, all with merit. But the London Classic Car Show ­– taking place at ExCeL in London’s Docklands from 8-11 January 2015 – might just have the definitive answer.

A special exhibit at the show, curated by Top Gear star James May, will reveal no fewer than 13 cars that he believes had a profound effect on the motor car as we know it today.

Among those staking a claim for top honours will be found in what James calls the ‘Hall of Obviousness’. Here there will be half a dozen significant cars including a Mini and a Model T Ford, a Beetle and the Benz Patent Motorwagen, the world’s first car from 1885.

More controversially James adds a Ford Mustang and a Toyota Prius to that list, pointing out that the Mustang was the original muscle car while the Toyota was the car that led the hybrid revolution.

The next half dozen are more controversial still. The ‘Corridors of Bloody Mindedness’ will include some obscure and some not so obscure cars that were all real pioneers.

There’s an electric vehicle from the turn of the century… the last century that is. There’s the car that inspired the Beetle and the car that did what the Model T did, only earlier.

James also promises examples of the most significant cars ever produced in Italy and in Japan. And there’s also room for a car that’s really out of this world.

“The Hall of Obviousness is exactly that, significant cars that most people would expect to be on a list of cars that changed the world,” said James. “The cars in the Corridors of Bloody Mindedness, on the other hand, are designed to make people think again.

It’s amazing to think that the car has always been future proof – even the earliest cars, whether powered by petrol, steam or electricity, are still running today.

“Of course, all the cars on show are my choices and are just as likely to start an argument as end one. I’ve already had a complaint from someone that the Austin Seven hasn’t been included. It’s a point of view not without merit, but… tough.”

But while the dozen ‘obvious’ and ‘bloody-minded’ cars are all strong contenders for the outright crown, none of them is The Car That Changed The World.

“As far as I am concerned, that honour belongs to something else… but I’m not going to tell you what that is. You’ll just have to come along to the London Classic Car Show to find out what it is,” he teased.

James will be taking the wraps off that car during the show’s Preview Evening, Thursday 8th January 2015.

The London Classic Car Show is the latest creation from Brand Events, the company behind all-action car shows like Top Gear Live, and will be crammed with innovative features.

Joining James May as a show curator is TV Chef James Martin, who as well as displaying his private collection of classics, will be running the James Martin Classic Café offering up ‘good, simple, grub’ to visitors.

The Grand Avenue, a motoring runway along which some of the world’s greatest cars will be driven, forms a centrepiece to the show while there will be another display celebrating the 60th anniversary of the dramatic Citroën DS and providing a first look at the new DS brand. The show will also have displays from leading classic car dealers and specialists.

Tickets are now available from the show website – www.thelondonclassiccarshow.co.uk – where early bird discounts reduce the on-the-door standard entry price from £25 to just £22.

Also available are family and group tickets, premium entry packages and tickets to the Preview Evening on the opening night, Thursday 8th January. Premium Tickets, which have limited availability, will give visitors access to The Grand Avenue’s premium enclosure, a drink, complimentary cloakroom plus a free copy of Octane magazine and the official event handbook.
