Pembrey awaits the VSCC for an epic weekend of Vintage motorsport
After a year absent in 2015, the Vintage Sports-Car Club return to Pembrey for its Welsh Speed Weekend on 20/21 August, incorporating Sprint, Team Relay Race and Seaman Memorial Trophies Race Meeting, as well as the first Pembrey AutoSolo – a new addition to this year’s weekend of Vintage motoring action.
The South Wales venue has proved a favourite amongst Club Members, where a friendly welcome is assured from the enthusiastic local Marshals and Spectators, who relish the visit of our Pre-war and Historic machinery and what is sure to prove a truly ‘Club’ event, as much about the relaxed and cheerful atmosphere of the Paddock as the exciting action on track.
Our celebrated Welsh Speed Weekend boasts two full days of motorsport action, with Sunday’s headline Seaman Memorial Trophies Meeting incorporating some of the Club’s most prestigious trophies, all on the technical and flowing 1.46 mile circuit.
The popular Sprint contest will again open proceedings on Saturday, forming a further round of the Club's 2016 Speed Championship, supported by M&P Insurance – with 'Double Points' on offer towards the annual standings.
The event will see almost 100 Pre-war & Historic Racing and Sports-Cars take part, as Competitors start their runs from the exit of Pit-Lane, taking in Hatchets Hairpin, Spitfires, Esses and Brooklands Hairpin to finish on the Speedway Straight, each receiving two morning Practice Runs, followed by two Timed Runs in the afternoon.
A highlight of the weekend will undoubtedly be the Club’s ever-popular Pre-war Sports-Car Team Relay Race, which will bring Saturday’s track action to a thrilling conclusion and this year renamed in honour of former Club Secretary, Mike Stripe, who sadly passed away in May.
The race will last 90 minutes with three car/driver combinations per team, whilst Team Managers will play a significant role as pit stop tactics, start car selection and stint length strategy are the important decisions that need to be made. Ten teams take to the grid this year, with friendly intermarque rivalries sure to come to the fore once more.
The Seaman Memorial Trophies collection will headline Sunday’s racing programme with a number of the Club’s oldest and most prestigious racing trophies to be contested across events for Vintage and Historic machinery.
In addition to the regular line-up, we are also honoured to hold the second Garry Whyte Trophy Handicap Race, bringing together Pre-war Rileys of both Racing and Sports-Car guises, in memory of the popular young Club Member, who passed away in 2014.
The 500 Owners’ Association bring their F3 (500) Racing Cars, always a popular addition to the Paddock, whilst the Welsh Sports and Saloon Cars will again provide an eclectic complement to the day’s proceedings, after providing such top entertainment on previous VSCC visits to Pembrey.
Following the success of our AutoSolo events at Silverstone and Oulton Park earlier in the season, the inaugural Pembrey edition will again form a support event to Sunday’s racing activity as both another attraction to entertain Spectators and a fantastic opportunity for our non-Racing Club Members to be part of a VSCC Race Meeting.
The ‘Driving Tests’ style event for road-going Pre-war cars will take place during the morning in Paddock 2, finishing in time for the Lunch Break, allowing participants a free afternoon to watch the race action on the circuit.
As at all VSCC Race Meetings, Spectators will be able to enjoy free access to the Competitor Paddock, where they can get up-close to the cars and drivers, whilst Pembrey offers superb viewing from the banking around the outside of the circuit.
Spectators arriving in a Pre-war or Classic car will be welcome to park in the designated Car Park, which is sure to attract a wonderful array of machinery, boosted this year by local Car Clubs and Vintage tractors. There will also be a number of Trade Stands located in the Paddock, and the venue’s Formula One Restaurant and Bar will be providing hot/cold food and drink all weekend.
Advance tickets are still available: VSCC Members - £10 each day or £18 weekend (book through VSCC ticket line 01608 644999 or online atwww.vscc.co.uk); Non-Members - £12 each day or £20 weekend (book through Pembrey at www.pembreycircuit.co.uk). Tickets will also be available on the day at £15 each day for all. Children under 16 go free. Free Camping is available on site for ticket holders all weekend.
Practice will get underway at 9.00am each day, with competition commencing after the Lunch Break at approximately 12.30pm.
The VSCC Welsh Speed Weekend will boast an eclectic line-up of racing machinery spanning almost 100 years.
