STREET CIRCUIT GETS READY
FOR F1 ACTION
• Unique one-mile street circuit built specially for IGNITION
• 100 iconic cars in action including Red Bull Racing RB7, new Aston DB11, classic rally cars, dragsters and trackday specials
• Star drivers include David Coulthard, Mark Webber and The Stig
• Jimmy McRae to open event in son Colin’s Subaru
One hundred of the world’s fastest, rarest, coolest, most iconic and most desirable cars ever made are set to bring the first IGNITION Festival of Motoring to life.
They will all be taking to a specially constructed one-mile street circuit circling Glasgow’s SECC for a series of parades and demonstrations. Track action will take place at set times throughout the entire three days of the show, which runs from 5-7 August.
Among the highlights are:
• Hot laps from the Red Bull Racing RB7
• A face-off between the Aerial Atom and BAC Mono track day cars
• Supercars, classic F1 racers, hot rods and dragsters
• Stars including Mark Webber (Friday), David Coulthard (Saturday and Sunday), Shane Lynch, The Stig and local heroes Gordon Shedden and Jimmy McRae
As well as enjoying the sight and sound of Grand Prix racers, hot rods, dragsters, classics and supercars, spectators will be treated to knowledgeable commentary and interviews from Nicki Shields, the face of the FIA’s Formula E TV coverage.
The 100 cars include classic Grand Prix machines from Lotus, Benetton, Williams and Maserati and supercars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren and AMG Mercedes – the Top Gear Magazine Performance Grid will also include the brand new Aston Martin DB11.
There will be parades of highly modified Ford and Chevrolet hot rods, brutally powerful dragsters and a special parade showing the evolution of the Porsche 911, from a very early 901 model to the 991 model GT3 RS.
Formula Fords, touring cars, Le Mans racers and Legends will showcase track motor sport while the special stage will be represented by iconic rally cars like the Lancia 037, Ford RS200, Peugeot T16, Subaru Impreza and Ford Focus WRC. Scottish team Albatec will be presenting its latest rallycross car.
Japspeed drifters, including Boyzone member Shane Lynch, will be sideways in their Nissan and Toyotas while there will also be off-road buggies and classic cars from AC to Ultima via Ford, Jaguar and Lotus.
Top Gear’s The Stig, meanwhile, will be undertaking a series of laps behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DB11 and GT8; a McLaren 650S and 570S; Lamborghini Huracan and Porsche GT3 RS and that duel between the Aerial Atom and BAC Mono.
But the ultimate highlight for many will be the demonstration laps from two former Grand Prix stars. On Friday, Mark Webber will be in Glasgow to drive a Porsche, while on Saturday and Sunday David Coulthard will slip into the cockpit of the 2011 championship-winning Red Bull Racing RB7. The car will also be driven by Sergio Sette Camara from the Red Bull Junior Team.
On track action will be matched by tyre smoking fun at the nearby Live Action Arena where the Top Gear Stunt Team led by Paul Swift, the JCB dancing diggers and the 2Bros Motorcycle Stunt Team will be performing dazzling tricks on one, two and, occasionally, four wheels.
Best of all, the Street Circuit fun and Live Action Zone are all included in the IGNITION entry price.
“IGNITION is a new type of car show. Yes, we have halls packed with fabulous classics, mouth-watering moderns and specially themed displays. But we also have the unique street circuit where visitors can see and hear their favourite cars in action. And the sight and sound of a modern F1 car in full flight is something never to be forgotten,” said Jeremy Vaughan, Event Direcor.
Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “It is testament to the quality of production and the ambition of the team at IGNITION that we can look forward to seeing no fewer than 100 iconic cars taking to the specially created Street Circuit around the SECC.
“IGNITION is shaping up to be a motoring festival like no other, with a quite spectacular line-up of live action, and we are delighted to be working in partnership with the event through EventScotland’s International Funding Programme.”
